Yoga Awareness

This is an integral style of yoga, which can be practised by anyone, regardless of age, ability or fitness level. The classes aim to develop and balance all aspects of one’s being – body, mind, emotions and psyche.

A class is usually an hour and a half long and consists of different physical posture practices, breathing techniques, deep relaxation and meditation.  

Physical postures (Asana) are practiced to stretch, massage and stimulate the energy within (Prana). They invigorate the body, develop strength, flexibility and endurance, and help to remove blockages and tensions. Asanas work on both the body and the mind, and by practicing with awareness one can integrate and harmonise the two.

Postures are taught systematically and safely in a non-competitive environment. Students are encouraged to work within their own comfort level and to modify practices according to their needs and abilities.

Breathing techniques (Pranayama) are more than mere exercises to expand the oxygen in the lungs.  Rather, these practices utilise the breath to influence the flow of energy in the body. Depending on the desired outcome, different breathing techniques are used to heat, cool, energise, balance, sensitise or tranquillise the being.

Deep relaxation (Yoga Nidra) probably the most popular and instant method! Leads to deep relaxation on the physical, mental and emotional levels. During the practice one’s body appears to be asleep, but the consciousness is functioning at a deeper level of awareness. Yoga Nidra has many associated health benefits and is used widely to relieve stress, tension, anxiety and insomnia. 

Meditation practices Meditation techniques are used to cultivate stability and stillness, and ultimately lead one to a deeper understanding of the inner nature, the Truth within. A wide variety of meditation techniques will be offered with systematic and accessible guidance.

Hoko Special Class

Series of 4 special Hoko classes.
‘Hoko’ is a close cousin of New Zealand’s Maori war dance ‘Haka’. This amazingly strong, physical and fun dance was performed in ancient times by warrior’s prior to attend war. This dance would lift their spirits and get rid of fear from their system, that way, access all power within to defeat the enemy. Hoko is still practiced today on the island but mainly as a performance form and in traditional ceremonies.

This class will be a fun exercise and release therapy, if you practice Hoko regularly, you will find yourself flowing between slow and fast paced movements that work synchronically with the entrancing traditional rhythms of the drums.

Zumba

Come to get crazy with Yael Mahler!  Zumba is a total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome. This class combines Latin rhythms & easy to follow moves.
For Zumba class please wear sneakers, super comfortable sport wear, plenty of water, and a huge smile on your face!

Kriya and Mantra Meditation

Come and experience how subtle Kriya practices and chanting mantras can create a profound silence where all the chatter of mind ceases and you can connect to the source effortlessly.

Suitable for all levels of meditators.

Come dressed in loose fitting, preferably natural fabric clothing and bring a cushion or a yoga mat to sit on.

Belly Dance Course

This Belly Dance 8 week course will take you on a journey through the East and Middle East incorporating delicious music and movement. We will learn to connect and love our bodies through femininity grounded with a deep connection to the earth. We will learn to isolate different parts of the body in order to develop coordination and rhythm through a deep relaxation of the body allowing ourselves to naturally flow within the rhythm of music. Through the course we will progress in our techniques and a beautiful choreographed dance. Term 3 starts 1 August.

Jazz Flare

Jazz Flare is a high energy, fun class with traditional jazz moves blended with flavours of funk, contemporary and theatre. We dance to a wide range of music from pop, RnB to old school so everyone can find their own unique flare and enjoy the essence of Jazz. Come learn some new moves, and if you’re a seasoned dancer, keep that old flare alive!

Zouk Lambada

ZOUK LAMBADA is a fun modern partner dance that developed from Lambada in Brazil. Characterised by flowing circular movements, wave-like body rolls and dynamic hair flicks ZOUK is a fusion of samba, tango, contemporary and hip hop. Zouk is danced to a variety of exciting popular music. In this class we will learn to dance in and out of contact with others. We will spin, slide, swerve, glide, groove, push, pull and connect. We will develop our sense of touch and learn to communicate through our whole body so that we can dance with grace, creativity, sensuality and freedom of expression. Warning: you may experience good feelings!:)

Contemporary

This contemporary dance class is not only designed to strengthen technique and personal style but also guides students to find self-expression and explore music dynamics. The class will focus on principles of breathing, control, balance, contraction/release and floor-work. The beginning of class will include guided improvisation and warm-up exercises to not only activate and warm up our minds and bodies, but to generate a sense of play, curiosity and presence. The lessons from the warm-up are then applied to learning a short choreography piece. Both experienced dancers and beginners are welcome!

Gracious Hula

Hula is an art-form and dance that can uplift the spirit. This class is a gentle style that is accessible at any age. Learn the meaning behind each graceful gesture in the mele (song) and immerse yourself in the aloha spirit as we coordinate the mind, body and soul. Move the body in ways that depict your inner and outer surroundings to tell a story and meaning that envelope the song. Create a connection with one another in the group as well as the elements of the `aina (land) we live in.

Qigong

Ziran Qigong is an internal martial art developed within the Zi Ran Men martial lineage and underpinned by the Taoist 5 Element and Chinese Acupressure Theories. By encouraging understanding of mind and body and the link between the two Ziran Qigong leads to recognition and effective release of stress and tension. The graceful flowing movements of the practice work to improve the flow of Qi through the 8 extraordinary meridians to nourish body systems and restore Yin Yang balance.

Movement Lab

This movement laboratory is about dropping in to the body, listening with intention and moving from impulse. It serves as a playground, a place to explore beyond habitual ways, witness the expression of the self and take care of what your body needs. Researching along with others stimulates new possibilities and a sort of co-creation of the moment. No dance experience necessary, everyone can access the benefit of connecting to their body and their unleashed movements. It is requested that participants enter mindfully and respect the integrity of the research.

Urban Dance Course

Urban, street dance and hip hop are an expression of a time, a place and a people. Learning street dance is an awesome way for you to get in touch with your grooving, stylish self, gain fitness and develop healthy brain function (choreo isn’t usually easy, but it does wonders for developing mental sharpness!) In this 8 week course we will loosen up, have a stretch, groove to some great classic tracks, learn foundational moves and slowly progress on a choreography that you can take home with you.  No experience necessary. Just come as you are and be ready to have some fun getting down!

Cardio Fusion

This fun fusion class begins with a cardio warm up that develops into a series of strength building exercises and flows into dynamic floor based movement sequences that help to increase body awareness and flexibility. It is a whole body fitness experience informed by anatomical integrity, efficient movement practices and contemporary dance technique. Cardio fusion is a unique and dynamic class for anybody wanting to increase their wellbeing, fitness or dance training. It is designed to help develop strength, agility, fluidity and grace. Its fun and engaging and a great way to break a sweat!

All abilities welcome to this inclusive and explorative class environment. Leggings or long pants recommended and remember to bring your water bottle!

Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method® (Feldenkrais) is a universal method for improving human life through better movement, sensation, posture and breathing. Feldenkrais classes enhance awareness through movement. They use gentle movement sequences that uncannily shift our relationship to gravity and foster a renewed curiosity in our ability to learn.

You can expect to walk away grounded, centred and potent – you will feel that you can stand all day. Everybody is welcome and will benefit from this healing practice. The Feldenkrais Method® is known to be a complimentary practice and enhance other creative pursuits – musicians, dancers, yogi’s – anyone wishing to enhance the range and quality of their craft.

Contemporary Dance Course

This contemporary dance course will run for 6 weeks. Saturday mornings 9-10.30am August 10th – September 21st, with no class on September 7th.
Due to popular demand from our weekly contemporary classes we have invited Talulah Gough to share an experience  that will expand your practice in the Contemporary dance style with the development of an ongoing choreography, dynamic warm-ups, great music and lots of delicious fun!

Pilates

Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility, muscular strength and endurance movements. In this class we address proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. The majority of the class is done on a yoga mat with a variety of standing, sitting and lying exercises. Everybody can benefit and enjoy pilates work whether it be for healing, fitness or to improve performance in other activities.
For the Pilates class please bring a mat, comfortable clothing and a towel.
